BGU Grant F'back 2024 Halliwell CA

Thank-you so much for the grant from BGU. We found the application process easy and not too bureaucratic.
The funding was spent on purchasing compost and a mix of perennial plants and some spring annuals for three troughs at the top of Halliwell Road
An important start to phase 2 of improving Halliwell as a place to live. Phase 1 was litter picking where in our week of action we collected over 300 bags of rubbish. Phase 2 is starting to brighten up our environment. We will be placing n order with the council to provide new trough planters at key points (they will be maintained by nominated people/groups), this grant was to fill 3 empty planters at the top of Halliwell Road.
This has had a positive effect on volunteers. Halfway youth group were very keen to do the planting, their leader is quite knowledgeable about horticulture, so after I made a suggested plan of the shrubs and plants I had purchased, and bulbs that were donated, they completed the work. They will support me in watering the troughs, as will the local pub. On a plus side I was able to show the group the community garden nearby and they were so impressed they will support us in working in the garden as part of the Duke of Edinburgh awards.
This has benefitted the local community by creating synergy from groups collaborating. They are at a key junction and very visible, quite symbolic of what we hope to achieve.
We have had feedback and quite a few positive comments from local residents who did not like seeing empty neglected planters.
Excitement from local residents keen to see more planters in their area.
